Easter eggs were planted near the campus flagpoles by members of the Northwest Collegiate Ministries. MHCC students raced the campus to pick up as many easter eggs as possible. The eggs contained different prizes like gift certificates to Roadhouse, Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and Olive Garden. However, the students were hunting down the biggest prized offered, a 30GB iPod.

Student scramble to find iPod prize in egg

An MHCC student won a 30GB iPod Wednesday at the Northwest Collegiate Ministries-hosted Easter egg hunt on campus after she found a plastic egg in one of the trashcans near the front turnaround.

The hunt was almost over, and most of the eggs had been found, except the one with the slip awarding the iPod. NCM staff had to give hints, and finally, Britton discovered it. However, she is not sure what she’s going to do with it. She said she might save it for a Christmas present for someone.

Numerous other prizes were awarded at the event including gift certificates to Roadhouse; Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and Olive Garden.

Brooke Davis, one of the NCM leaders, said, “I think more people showed up than we were expecting.” This is the first year NCM has sponsored an egg hunt on campus. She said it was fun that people got as excited as they did.

Curtis Burgess participated in the event and said when he heard about it, he wanted to know what the prizes were.

“I was pumped,” he said. “You can’t beat free stuff.”

He said it was “kind of muddy, but it was worth it, though.”

The eggs were hidden around the fountain and the field facing Kane Road.

Zee Farrouge said when he had heard about the event, he thought there was a catch, but as he sat around after the hunt and he heard the iPod hadn’t been found yet he said, “The iPod’s out there; I gotta go.”

Davis said most of the prizes were donated, but they had to purchase the iPod.

The idea to do an egg hunt like this came from Amanda Walmsley, one of the NCM leaders. Davis said about 15 people helped put the event on.

Davis said the purpose of the event was to “let people celebrate the resurrection of Christ, and just remind people what Jesus did for them and to give people a good time.”

Jill Davis, an MHCC student involved in NCM, said they hoped “to get our name out there,” and get people interested in their Bible study, which meets on Tuesdays at noon in AC 1251.

Students also gathered in the main mall to hear Benevolent, a local band brought in by NCM. Donny Springer, another NCM leader, said all the band members live within two miles of MHCC and that at least one of them has attended the college.

Jamie Dempsey’s boyfriend, AJ Wood, is the drummer for Benevolent. She said the band got together in February 2005 and classified them as indie-rock-alternative. She said they’re not a “Christian band” but more like “Christians in a band.” They can be reached at: www.myspace.com/benevolent.
