DeNiro and Fanning in search of a hit
Evan Green
The Advocate

“Hide and Seek” opens today starring Robert DeNiro and Dakota Fanning, two of Hollywood’s most recognizable “has-beens.” DeNiro hasn’t done a great movie since “Meet the Parents” (that was half a decade ago), and Fanning’s days are definitely numbered as the “I Am Sam” afterglow slowly fades.

But which star has it worse? Is it worse to be a Hollywood veteran out-acted by a 10-year-old, or is it worse to be a 10-year-old who will never be considered a Hollywood veteran?
No matter who has it worse, this much is certain: “Hide and Seek” will not rescue either of these stars’ floundering careers.

The movie’s main flaw is its unoriginality. This movie has been done at least half a dozen times before.

Dr. Callaway (DeNiro) is a psychiatrist whose daughter Emily (Fanning) claims to have an imaginary friend named Charlie. At first Callaway thinks Charlie is only a figment of Emily’s imagination or a convenient culprit to blame her misdeeds on. But he soon will find out that Charlie is much more than an invisible companion. Hint: you’ve seen this plot twist before.

Like the film’s stars, this plot is also a has-been.
