Asian Culture Club plans celebration for lunar new year

The MHCC Asian Cultures Appreciation Club will be hosting a lunar new year celebration next Tuesday, Feb. 8.

Lunar New Year is a traditional Chinese and Vietnamese celebration that falls on the first new moon of the new lunar year. There will be traditional presentations like lion dances that welcome in the New Year, a Vietnamese magic show and martial arts demonstrations.

Red envelopes, which in traditional Chinese culture are filled with money and given as gifts that symbolize good luck, will be given along with raffle prizes. This year is the year of the rooster, one of 12 signs that fall under the lunar calender. You will be able to find out your sign and your fortune as well as how to make Chinese food to-go boxes and learn some origami.

If you’re interested in learning more about lunar new year, the celebration is free and will be from noon to 3 p.m. in the vista dining room.
