Messing and Mulroney shine in 'The Wedding Date'

As Feb 14 quickly approaches, directors and producers are looking for new and unique ways of bringing couples and singletons to the movie theater. With its unique story line and quick wit supplied by stars Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney, “The Wedding Date” averages as your typical but lovable romantic comedy.

Kat Ellis (Messing) is a nervous wreck when she receives a wedding invitation to her sister’s London wedding where her ex-boyfriend will be the best man. Wanting to make him jealous, Ellis hires escort Nick (Mulroney) to accompany her and pose as her boyfriend. As the story unravels, secrets fall out that put the wedding in jeopardy.

This movie falls in the “average romantic comedy” area; it’s neither a tremendous flop nor an epic. Messing is charming, flexing her comedy skills she earned from her show, “Will and Grace.” Mulroney is his typical charming self, not breaking away from his comfortable role of Prince Charming.

The movie, with its one-liners and humorous situations, remains tolerable if not enjoyable up until the climax with tears and dramatic exits; the scene felt out of place and the emotional levels were way out of sync with the rest of the film.

Though it stumbles, the movie regains its composure and finishes with grace. “The Wedding Date” is a decent date movie, with an escort or not.
