Kanye West's big ego at stake in New Artist category

At the 2004 American Music Awards, Kanye West rushed onstage after it was announced that Gretchen Wilson had bested him in the New Artist category.

“I feel I was definitely robbed,” Kanye told a stunned audience. “I was the best new artist this year. I don’t know if I’ll be back at this award show next year.”
Kanye’s tantrum continued after he was escorted backstage. He began cursing and calling Gretchen’s music “bullshit.”

So you can see why this year’s Grammys will be so awkward.
Kanye and Wilson are competing for the same New Artist category at the Grammys.

Both were huage breakout sensations in their respective genres. West’s “The College Dropout” was one of the topselling albums of the year. Gretchen Wilson’s “Redneck Woman” enjoyed a lot of airplay.

Subsequently West has apologized for his outburst. Hopefully he has finally recovered from the shock of not being the year’s best new artist.
