Women play competitive game despite 42-68 loss

The Women’s basketball team showed some aspiration in their 42-68 defeat against Portland Community College on Wednesday.

After only scoring 10 points in the first half they came out in the second with a little more bounce in their step, getting noticeably more shots and playing better defense.
“I basically told them that Portland wasn’t really limiting us, we just weren’t recognizing offensive opportunities. Our feet were slow defensively so we picked up the intensity in that aspect,” said head coach Brianna Finch.

Kristen Tillstrom led the Saints with 14 points, Christa Attleberger was huge with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocked shots, and Ashley Fauver had 11 points.
In the final minutes, despite the final score, they played hard putting pressure on PCC’s offense and created a few scoring opportunities.

According to Finch, the women need to improve on rebounding and controlling turnovers since 21 of PCC’s points were off of turnovers.

The Saints (0-10 and 1-23) are playing in arguably the toughest conference with top contenders like Clackamas, Lane and Umpqua who all made the top ten in the Feb. 3 NWAACC Coaches’ Poll.

For tomorrow’s game against SWOCC, the Saints will make some preparations. “We need to work on our offense, more specifically our timing, and to recognize how their defense is playing,” said Finch.

“They are a team that we lost to by about 20 the last time, but in the second half we were very competitive. If we played two halves like we did our second half then we’re very capable of coming away with a win.”
