Surgical Tech raffling quilt
The Surgical Technology Student Club is raffling off a quilt, on display in the business office. Tickets are on sale at the table in front of the bookstore Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. now through April 24. Tickets cost $3 each or two for $5. The club is also raffling a DVD player. The drawings will be held April 26 at noon in Room 1756, but winners need not be present. For information send an e-mail to [email protected].

Stem cell talk next week
The MHCC science department will host a lecture by Dr. Phillip Streeter entitled “Stem Cells: Fact and Fiction” April 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the MHCC College Theater. Streeter, an assistant professor at Oregon Health and Science University, will speak on the potential success and potential failures of stem cell use in treating disease. The lecture is open to the public and donations will benefit the MHCC Science Club. For information contact Jack Brook at 503-491-7473.

Pontiac Vibe raffle from Foundation
The MHCCD Foundation Board is raffling a black 2004 Pontiac Vibe. Tickets are $10 and are limited to 3,000. Proceeds are used to benefit MHCC students with scholarships and to purchase equipment. The car is sponsored by Weston Pontiac Buick GMC Kia. The winner will be announced at the “Rockin’ Round the Block” car show on Aug. 13 at 5:45 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by calling 503-491-7204 or in person at the MHCC Foundation Office, Room 2398 or online at www.mhccfoundation.org.

Schiavo-inspired debate
There will be a political forum discussing “Terri Shiavo: the right to die vs. the right to life” Monday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Town and Gown Room. Janet Campbell, political science instructor, will present an overview of the case before the MHCC Forensics Team debates the issue.

Rho Theta to hold orientation
The MHCC honor society, Rho Theta, a branch of Phi Theta Kappa, is holding orientation for new members April 27 from noon to 1p.m. and April 28 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Lake Room of the College Center. Members must have completed 12 or more credits at Mt. Hood, and have at least one quarter with a 3.5 grade point average or higher, and have a cumulative average of 3.0 or higher. Application deadline approaching
The deadline for student applications for scholarships is May 6. The applications are available in the Office of Financial Aid or on the web at www.mhcc.edu/scholarships.

Gilbertson named career specialist
Nicole Gilbertson was selected for the permanent position of Career Specialist in the Career Planning and Counseling Center. She has filled the position for the past year, and will be helping students with their job search including resumes, interviewing and locating jobs. Gilbertson completed her master’s of science in counseling at Portland State University.

Tables available for Rites of Spring
The “Rites of Spring” will be held May 9-12. Any groups or departments interested in having a table at this event should contact Amy Carroll at [email protected].

Classes compete in food drive
The Food Exchange is holding a food drive in which classes compete to give the most food. The winning class wins a pizza party. The competition starts April 25. For more information, contact Jennifer Melberg at [email protected] or call (503) 491-7224.
