Scintillating ‘Sin City’
Amy Staples
The Advocate

Some of the most outrageous, memorable characters ever created made it to film in Frank Miller’s “Sin City.”

The men are rough and (mostly) corrupt and the women are beautiful and ruthless in this action/noir flick about an unnamed city where people live hard and fast, battles between good and evil abound and everyone has a secret.

With a list of veteran actors including Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Michael Clarke Duncan, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Jessica Alba and, my favorite, Mickey Rourke (the list goes on, but why spoil the surprise?), how could any movie fan pass this film by? Vampy Gail, scarred Marv, true-blue John Haritgan – fans of the graphic novel will see all their favorite characters in the movie.

Snappy dialogue, unforgettable characters and scenes cut with panels from the graphic novel make this a great film that not only jumps in the viewers laps and grabs them by the face, but is also ground-breaking in its approach.

Shot almost entirely against a green screen, the film would have been nearly impossible to shoot in the traditional way. And since the film is black and white, with choice details in color - a woman’s red dress, beautiful blue eyes, red sneakers – that helps viewers appreciate every detail so much more, and makes the bloody scenes not as disturbing.

This is a definite must-see for fans of Miller’s graphic novel of the same name and movie fanatics alike.
