Softball poised to take NWAACCs

After eight months of work, the Mt. Hood softball team has a good chance to take it all this weekend.

Today through Sunday, the Saints will travel to Delta Park to take on the Olympic Rangers at 1 p.m., and, if they win, they’ll face the Columbia Basin Hawks at 3:30 p.m. during the long-awaited NWAACC Championships.

Recently, the Saints swept two doubleheaders against South Puget Sound and Grays Harbor including two massive shut-outs pitched by Alexis Hadenfeld and Krystle Brooks, May 6 and 7, 7-0, 9-1, 22-0, 19-0, respectively. In both of the Grays Harbor victories, starting catcher Jill Quesenberry went four-for-five and four-for-four. The Saints also took the second game of a doubleheader at Centralia, May 13, and also defeated the Clackamas Cougars during game two of a May 14 doubleheader. Thus far, the Saints are 23-9 in league play and 25-11 overall going into this afternoon’s tournament.

“We are strong in every aspect of our game,” said head coach Meadow McWhorter. “If we mesh the way I know we can mesh, then we will be successful. It’s just up to us whether or not we bring 110 percent to the field when we play.”

Left fielder Chelsea Dixon, who was injured the first part of the season with a broken finger, has rejoined the team in the last few weeks and thinks the Saints have a good chance of reaching their goal of winning the NWAACC championship.

“We all need to make sure we’re on the same page in order to win. If we do this we will be unstoppable,” she said. “We need to take every game one by one, concentrate on the game ahead, and just step up to the challenge.”

McWhorter said every team should offer good competition for the Saints. “During the tournament, all the teams really bring their “A-game”, and if our pitchers are on key and we keep hitting the ball like we have been lately, than we should do well.”

“I’m excited to see the team perform at their best and I think they are excited to perform too,” she added.
