‘Sisterhood’: not just for pre-teens

From author Ann Brashares comes the book-to-movie production of “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.”

This is a story about four girls connected by one pair of pants. Though with its bubblegum, cutesy cover as a movie just for pre-teen girls, one can easily see the plot line is beyond make-up tips and boys.

Each girl has her unique trait: Lena's (Alexis Bledel) quiet beauty, Carmen's (America Ferrera) loud and boisterous intelligence, Bridget's (Blake Lively) competitive and thriving spirit, and Tibby's (Amber Tamblyn) anti-everything attitude.

Along with their conflicting personalities comes their different troubles: Lena is introduced to her heritage in Greece, Carmen spends the summer with her father and surprise fiancé he's about to marry in South Carolina, Tibby goes through her troublesome summer job and is inspired by a young girl in Maryland, and Bridget falls for an older man at soccer camp in California.

During their first summer apart, the girls send the pants to each other to give courage though they can't be together. As the summer rolls on, each girl finds herself with help from the pants.

At first glance, this movie can look childish, if not immature, for older viewers. Though the plot revolves around the summer of four 16-year-old girls, the situations are universally known. A friend diagnosed with cancer, finding a summer love, finding one’s heritage and loving it, and losing virginity can be experienced by anyone at any age.

The performances by the four stars of the movie marks bright futures for the young starlets but Ferrera shines the brightest. Ferrera's portrayal as proud, Puerto Rican Carmen almost mirrors the character from her previous movie, "Real Women Have Curves.” Be prepared to see Ferrera in bigger, more groundbreaking roles.

Based off the series “The Traveling Pants”, the movie follows the novel "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" closely; but like every movie, screenplay writers will alter the plot a little. But how can the loss of a sister or major alteration of a story line change? Not much for some viewers.

Whether you’re 14 or 28, girls of all ages can appreciate, if not envy, the relationship these girls have. While watching this movie just remember the rules: When wearing the pants you must love yourself and your pals. Oh, and no double-cuffing. It's tacky.
