Marriage can be for homosexuals too

Dan O'Day

The Advocate

The Defense of Marriage Coalition is a vile, fascist organization with such an obviously un-American agenda that it should disgust anyone who even slightly believes in civil rights.

Using scare tactics and ridiculous propaganda (and oftentimes just plain lying), the DOMC paints a picture of a future where, if same-sex couples are allowed to get married, public schools will have hallways lined with diagrams teaching children how to have gay sex, and people will be demanding nuptials with all sorts of beasts and reptiles.

There is no correlation between a man or a woman wanting to publicly express their commitment to their life-partner and someone wanting to marry a pig or a frog. It is extremely offensive, in these days of supposed enlightenment, that homosexuals would be considered the halfway point between heterosexuals and animals.

Homosexuality might be a “sin” to these ignorant Christian zealots, but here in Oregon (and all 49 other states in the land of the free, home of the brave), homosexuality is a valid, respectable lifestyle and is absolutely not grounds for discrimination, especially exclusion from a legal contract entitling an American couple who dedicates the rest of their lives to raising a family together to all manner of benefits, from tax exemptions to inheritance to hospital visitation.

When is someone going to break it to these delusional moralist extremists that homosexuals are already allowed to raise children? The DOMC is constantly harping about how children need “a father and a mother”, “one man, one woman”, to be a family unit, but same-sex couples are already allowed to adopt children and raise them. The only thing the DOMC will accomplish to “help” these children if Measure 36 passes will be to take away their health insurance, and their chance to have their families acknowledged by the government.
Measure 36 advocates have such muddled argument for their case. Citing all kinds of ludicrous and obscure sources and combining blatantly dishonest statistics with biblical examples, many of them seem to not realize that in the U.S.A. we have a little thing called “Freedom of Religion.”Many intelligent, even spiritual, Americans do not believe in Adam and Eve, Sodom and Gomorrah, or that Jesus Christ’s mother was a virgin.

The Bible is undoubtedly a respectable piece of historical literature, but it has no place in our laws. If your religion states that homosexuality is “unnatural” or “evil”, then be the best heterosexual you can be. In the real world, you are the only person you and your god can speak for. Until all couples that have made lifelong commitments in the eyes of the law are forced to have “civil unions” (which doesn’t sound like such a bad idea), homosexuals should be allowed to get married. It is a horrifying suggestion that people who choose to be in a same-sex relationship should be
