Women display work ethic in losses

The women’s basketball team came out of the Clackamas Tournament a little disappointed, going 0-3 in Oregon City from Nov. 26-28.

They had a rough start going into the tournament down a player and only playing one game prior. The girls weren’t used to how the fast the game pace was.

The first team they played was Big Bend, losing 85-70 and was led by forward Christa Attleberger with 24 points.

The next day they faced Clackamas Alumni and lost 85-64. They were led by guard Jare Retherford with 19 points.

Forward Kristen Tillstrom led the Saints with 19 points and nine rebounds in their 66-44 loss against SW Oregon on the final day of the tournament.

Head coach Brianna Finch said the team needs to stay consistent throughout the entire game, “We are competitive for the first halves, but we’re just having trouble putting out for the full 40 minutes,” Finch said, “We lost focus and control of the little details.”

The Saints took more out of the tournament than a 0-3 record by displaying their hard work. They executed their offense and played solid half-court defense Finch said. In fact, they held the first team they played scoreless for the first six minutes of the game.

Overall, the team is doing better by starting to understand some of the basketball concepts Finch has been teaching and it shows by their increased effort in practice.

They are looking to improve in their next tournament in Everett, Wash., starting Friday and running until Dec.5. The girls have been increasing the intensity in practice to be more prepared for the speed. “The first tournament was really for learning and getting back into playing and getting used to the game speed,” Finch said. “We’ll be more relaxed this time.”

Their first match-up will be against the host team Everett who are 3-0 overall. “We’re going to come out strong and I think we’ll do okay,” Finch said.
