Sorenson spent the afternoon in the College Center and Vista Dining Center, talking with students. “He wants to let students know he has their priorities in mind,” Stephen Floyd, ASG director of communications, said. “He has experience with student issues, but he wants to gain insight to other issues he is not yet aware about.” Sorenson was a board member with Lane Community College from 1983 to 1996. Megan Jones, who tutors math and hopes to become a teacher, read first. Her work was dark, but won the approval of the audience. Her last piece was a story of playing Rock Paper Scissors with her sister. “We acted on nerve, endings quicker than flesh,” she read. Shaun Tolan wrote about love, divorce and living alone. Deciding to present his piece entitled “Love Lost,” he recited from memory, “leaving heads in clouds and hearts at the bottom of the sea.” The Poetry Slam is held every quarter and anyone is welcome to sign up.
