The light tower at the MHCC stadium was taken down Thursday morning. A crane was brought in to hoist a worker up the standard and tie a strap around the tower. Working through a snow flurry, the contractors then cut the bolts holding the tower up. The crane then helped safely lower the tower to the ground.

Prevention in action

School takes down stadium light before it joins its fallen comrade

A stadium light was removed during the snowfall Thursday morning, after it had been determined dangerous. Following the fall of one of the six stadium lights on Feb. 10, the rest were subsequently tested for safety precautions.

There are four two-inch bolts that anchor the light standards to the ground. The standard at the northeast end of the field was found to have one bolt in bad condition.

The college stadium has been closed and 100-feet to each side of the northeast standard is taped off for the last month.
People have ignored the closing of the stadium and continue to use the track. Athletic Director Fred Schnell said there is no stationed patrol of the area, but Public Safety, when it makes their rounds, will fine violators.

He also said the people getting fined get mad for being ticketed and the most common defense is, “I pay taxes, I have a right to use the track.”

Now that the standard has been taken down, the college stadium will be re-opened and people will be able to use the track and other facilities.
