ASG has two vacancies

By Nikolina Hatton

There are two positions open in the Associated Student Government for spring term: the director of community affairs and the administrative assistant for the executive cabinet. Students who are appointed will receive a tuition waiver worth up to 12 credits.

The director of community affairs works with Barney’s Pantry (Mt. Hood Community College’s food bank), the angel tree project in December, helps with food drives for the Portland Food Bank, and acts as the presiding officer and chair of the community affairs council, according to student body President Stephen Emery and information released by the ASG.

Emery said their purpose is to “get out and help the community of the Gresham-Troutdale area.” For this position, he is looking for someone who is outgoing, people-oriented and able to coordinate. As of Wednesday, he had only one application for the position.

The administrative assistant is in charge of publishing the minutes for the ASG executive cabinet meetings and helps prepare the agenda for the meetings. The assistant also keeps ASG files up-to-date, serves as correspondence secretary and manages the office in regards to supplies, organization, birthdays and awards.
As of Monday, Emery had two applications for the administrative assistant position.
Asked why a student should get involved in student government, Dick Magruder, the coordinator of student activities, said, “You get some real practical skills from the team work aspect.”

He said the ASG serves the students by surveying them and seeing what kinds of programs and services they would like to see get attention and they serve as student leaders to get things done. He said this year’s group is working on the future of the students’ experience.
Applications are available at the College Center. For questions and concerns regarding the positions, they can call Dick Magruder at 503-491-7269, or the ASG at 503-491-7224.
