Election guidelines to be updated

By Rachel Kramer

This year’s ASG elections have shined light on the confusion of the guidelines controlling them, prompting changes from the ASMHCC senate.

Although past precedent has demonstrated that presidential nominees run on a ticket with a vice presidential nominee, this year there will be a ticket without a president.

“The current guidelines for ASG elections do not specifically state that a student has to run with a partner on a ticket,” Cynthia Mershon, elections chair, said. “It simply states that the applicant must file for the position specifically. The ability to run for ASG office should be open for all students.”

With a ticket lacking a presidential nominee, a special election is currently an option.
“In the event the candidate that is running on his own for vice president gets 50 percent plus one vote, he will win the position of vice president of ASG and a special election will be held on May 30-31 for the office of president,” Mershon said.

According to Dick Magruder, student events and center coordinator, the special election for president would open up to the entire student body.

No signatures would be required, candidates would just have to file.

During the ASMHCC senate meeting Wednesday, there were changes proposed to create clearer guidelines for the next election in 2007.

According to ASG Vice President Richard Test, among the proposed changes is the definition that interested parties must run on a two-person ticket.

These changes will be further discussed at the next senate meeting, Wednesday at 3 p.m.
