Mount St. Helens

On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted, blowing off the top of the mountain. The eruption sent debris flying for miles and devastated local forests and vegetation. At least 57 people died. The lava dome that is forming in the crater continues to grow. The United States Geological Survey says although the levels of seismic activity and eruptive behaviors are low, they could change without warning.
