Letter to the Editor
Reader opinion lacks research

I am writing this letter in response to Michael Fullman’s “letter to the editor” volume 40, issue 11.

First, this country was founded on separation of church and state. America is supposed to be the land of the free. We choose our religion or the lack thereof. I won’t support a belief that is prejudiced and exclusionary; treating me like my beliefs are wrong and invalid.

“And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye and do not perceive the plank in your own eye?” Luke 6:41. Maybe, Michael, you should do some more research in a non-biased way and get another point of view before you condemn anyone because their life does not conform to yours.

Secondly, 48 percent of America did not vote for Bush. Georgey-boy ran four years ago as a “Uniter, not a Divider.” Suddenly America is split in two. Red tears through the middle of the country. Ironic, as the red symbolizes blood shed claiming this country; now in Iraq the blood of troops and innocent Iraqi citizens, children included, is spilled. Christians think murder is wrong and a sin, but it is OK to kill now? Sure, Iraq wasn’t in a very good position; but what right did we have to invade and change things to follow our example?

Lastly, being gay is not a choice. I NEVER had a say in my sexuality. The only choice I had was whether or not I would accept it and love myself. If I could choose to be straight, I would. Nobody tells you you’re going to Hell if you’re straight. Take a look at the real world. Like it or not, we exist. By denying non-heterosexuals the right to marry, you convey the message that their love is invalid, creating exclusion and inequality in America, hurting thousands.
