Alumni art on showcase in gallery |
Art created by Mt. Hood Community College alumni will be on display in the Visual Arts Center Gallery. Students will get a chance to see artwork ranging from pottery and ceramics to paintings and photography by students who received their initial visual arts education here at MHCC. Many of the alumni have moved on to university level art classes or started their own businesses involving their artistic talents. "It demonstrates a process when you continue on as a professional," said coordinator Pat Barrett. "(This) gives a chance for the college to see what people are doing after they leave here." Nancy Smith studied photography here at MHCC in the mid 80s. Since then, Smith has started her own photography company called Focus on Photography and has won many awards for photos of nature and landscapes. One of her pieces in the show is called "The Last Light on the Mountain", which shows a shot of Mt. Hood at dusk. Smith has also won awards from many prestigious organizations including National Geographic for her self-published calendar. Another alumnus featured in this year's show is Judy Wang. On her way out of the door here at Mt Hood, Wang was invited to share some of her pieces in this year's show. One recognizable piece is her cast iron sculpture of six ears of corn called "6 years." "There's something beautiful about corn,” said Wang. "The husk has so many lines and I wanted to see what it looked like cast in different mediums." Wang hopes one day to teach college level ceramics. |
