In an effort to promote awareness about healthy living, the Students Activities Board sponsored the 2005 Wellness Fair Wednesday in the College Center at MHCC.

There were drawings held to win prizes and because it is officially “Sexual Responsibility Week,” free condoms were given out as well to promote safe sex.

Many vendors participated at the event, including ASG Food Bank, Weight Watchers, and Oregon College of Oriental Medicine.

Awareness ribbons were displayed and available for students to wear in support of their favorite cause by representing a certain color.

Kris Ford, representative of the students activities board, explained that the event is a good way to give students healthy events on campus. Although it is generally an annual event, it had not been held since 2003. She is hoping the turnout will be good and said, “ We just try to have fun.”

The “Promote Food Bank” booth was represented by Jennifer Melberg who said it is open five days a week and an hour at each time. It is located in the College Center in Room 1049A and has been open all term.

“The Food Bank is in great need of donations,” Melberg said.

Weight Watchers representative Andra Odegaard said it is her first time to attend the Wellness Fair at MHCC but had helped a fair amount of people with information. She explained how they have what is called an “Outward Program” where they go to different companies and hold meetings. Registration is free through March 5 and only $12 to join, said Melberg.

Cody Bakken, who is part of student government, staffed an anti-smoking booth with information on an abundance of healthy options. “In student government, we help each other out as much as possible.”
