Music Department bids farewell to winter term |
Music took center stage Tuesday and Wednesday night as combination band, The Jazz Band, symphonic choir, orchestra, and symphonic band finished winter term with two concerts in the auditorium. Directed by Susie Jones, three combo bands were the first to perform. Playing improvisational pieces of jazz, members of both bands had the chance to show off each of their talents on their instruments, whether it be the bass or guitar. The small audience was treated to the sounds of a touring jazz group from University of Oregon called "U of O Faculty Trio." Pianist Toby Koenigsberg, bassist Tyler Abbott and drummer Jason Palmer played three songs, one of which was written by Portland-based jazz composer Elliot Smith. Last to take the stage that night was the Jazz Band, performing many songs they did in Taiwan during the Chinese New Year celebration. Each tune was decked out with solos from many sections. Wednesday was the night for many other bands in the department with powerful pieces. The symphonic choir performed movements from Mozart's “Requiem.” If the singing couldn't be challenging enough, the choir of 37 had to learn the piece in Latin to be able to give the movement’s full effect. Artists like Bach and Albinoni were on the list in the Orchestra's performance. Each song was drenched with solos from violin, flute and keyboard. Before leaving the stage, cello players Ivan Caluya and Owen Hoffman-Smith performed amazing solos from composer Vivaldi. Last to the stage was the symphonic band, playing four pieces including one from the “Lord of the Rings” soundtrack called "Hobbits." |
