Anthony’s top music picks of 2004: part two

Anthony Brunelle
The Advocate

As promised, here’s the remaining half of my list. This half was a little harder to create but I feel I did my best. So enjoy the rest of 2004 and get ready for what could be an interesting 2005.

Top five bass players:
1. Iscariah
2. Robin Eaglestone
3. Paul Grey
4. Vortext
5. Memnock

Behemoth’s bass player Iscariah proved once again that he has the talent. After the 2004 release of “Demigod,” more people started to talk about them as a band not just a band, but with a name.
As far as Robin, Paul, Vortext and Memnock they tried their hands to prove that they had what it took but it just didn’t match up to Iscariah.

Top five drummers:
1. Nick Baker
2. Inferno
3. Joey Jordison
4. Tjodalv
5. Horgh

Three words: “Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia.” Nick Baker’s break-out album into Norwegian black metal world. His previous work with Cradle of Filth was great but he really was able to show off his true talent by joining Dimmu Borgir in 1999 and then being thrown out of the band in January 2004.
I would like to highlight one other man, Joey Jordison from Slipknot. This tiny speedball from Iowa has proven time after time he’s got the skill and the speed to be a great drummer.

Top five keyboardists:
1. Mustis (Dimmu Borgir)
2. Martin Powell (Cradle of Filth)
3. Les Smith (Anathema)
4. Schomtz (Mushroomhead)
5. Craig Jones (Slipknot)

Keyboardists rarely get the spotlight except for Mustis of "Dimmu Borgir." At a young age of 24, this young black metal superstar has made a huge impact. Just being in Dimmu Borgir alone puts him on the hill with some of the greatest keyboard players out there.
Martin Powell of Cradle of Filth has great talent and I want make a big deal about this guy simply because he's good at what he does and never asks for help! The rest made it because they have talent and it needs to recognized.

Top five worst bands:
1. Metallica
2. Korn
3. Dope
4. Agathadamion
5. Linkin Park

Okay in just a few words, these bands SUCK! Okay, it's time to move on and get away from the bands of your high school days. Classic bands or not, they suck! I can’t stand Metallica or Korn. I mean, so what if back in the days they were good?
They had their chance. Move on! Get away from these bands of the past and listen to great bands that are out there.

Bands/artists to watch in 2005:
1. Angtoira
2. Wednesday 13
3. Liz Kristine
4. Mnemic
5. Stone Sour
6. DevilDriver
7. Rob Halford
8. Otep
9. System of a Down
10. Cradle of Filth

I want to highlight Angtoria. This is an up-and-coming band started by Sarah Jezebel Deva. I see great things for her and this band in 2005. Sarah's work with Cradle of Filth is great but it's time to see a new side of this great vocalist.
As for the rest of my “to-watch” list, I would say "Wednesday 13, Mnemic, Otep and System of a Down" will probably make a huge impact on this coming year.
We have reached the end and there's a list of some of Top 5's of 2004, a quick flash back of this year. It had its ups and downs and at times it just seemed like some of the bands lost their edge, and maybe they did?
Anyway I'm crossing my fingers for the New Year. There is a lot of good talent out there but it's a matter all of us fans supporting them.
