Mt. Hood Community College’s fall term has begun by introducing itself with Welcome Week. Welcome Week provides students with entertainment, staff members and new faces. Activities begin today and run through Thursday in the Main Mall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Staff members will be working at “Ask Me” tables to provide students with information, such as classroom locations, and may offer general clarification. Students can also experience the music, games, dancing and other activities. Possible games will include a water balloon toss and a lemon-and-spoon race. Games will be held today, Wednesday and Thursday in the Main Mall. On Tuesday, the CASS program will put on a dance show that will include Central American dancing. Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to get involved in student clubs. The Ceramics Club offers club members a six-hour lab on Saturdays, along with a workshop for art students, but students must be an art major to join. The Veterans Club is new. It gives veterans the opportunity to meet with other veterans and make connections. It is also meant to create a support group and to increase awareness of veterans’ issues. “We are hoping for more people this year,” said Spence White, a representative of the Veterans’ Club. Meetings begin Oct. 3 from noon to 1 p.m. Four bands will play in the Main Mall this week, two of which are returning bands from previous years. Three of the bands are local, while one, Kubist Hall, is from California. Kubist Hall will be playing today, Good Morning Genevieve plays Tuesday, Voodoo BBQ Wednesday and Rhythm Culture will play Thursday. Voodoo BBQ has been playing in the Northwest for the past three years. According to the band’s website, they have a reggae beat that is influenced by the Caribbean and Americas, a mixture of blues and jazz. Welcome Week is provided every year as a way to invite students to Mt. Hood Community College. “I’m very excited to be a part of this,” said Nuvia Martinez, the Student Activities Board’s seasonal events coordinator. “It’s a great way to get students involved, create connections and to just have fun and relax.” Welcome Week is hosted and organized by the MHCC Associated Student Government. |
