Lady Saints lose their first OT
The women’s basketball team “finally put two quarters together,” according to coach Larry Davis of Saturday’s overtime loss against SWOCC 62-57. The game was close to the very end of regulation, until the Saints got into some foul trouble giving SWOCC a chance, and ultimately forcing overtime. “We played really well,” said Davis. This was the first time the women went into overtime. “It was the last thing that I wanted to happen. We didn’t want to go into overtime. We knew that if we did, it would cost us the game because of our foul trouble and lack of personnel,” said Davis. Some of MHCC’s top players shined in that game. Tristen Naylor scored 20 points, giving her 123 overall points averaging 7.2 per game. Teena Yates had 14 points, and is leading the team in scoring with 187 points, averaging 11 per game. Angela Zielinski grabbed seven rebounds, adding to her 39 total, averaging 2.3 per game. The Saints had time to reflect and recoup during this week’s bye week. “It means a lot, we’re pretty fatigued and tired, and we’re playing pretty shorthanded,” said Davis. They took a few days off, and when they did practice they didn’t work on anything new, or change things up. They worked on what they usually do: team-building drills and some skill development practice. Davis said the main purpose of this bye week was to just “rest the legs a little bit.” The Saints are at the bottom of the Southern Region with their 0-8 league record. The women hit the road Saturday to play Lane, 7-1 and 23-1 overall. “We played well against them last time. They might have an injury to one of their key women. I think we’ll play well and compete with them,” said Davis.
