Colleges to visit on Transfer Day
The College Center will once again be hosting the Transfer Day event, where colleges from the area remind students of what they have to offer.
“Be a transfer student. If you come you’ll get a lot of great info on transferring to four\-year colleges like the Art Institute and OSU,” said Pam Kuretich, part of MHCC Career Development Services. “It’s a great way to hear about their programs.”
The event will take place in the College Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8. Food services will be hosting a Mexican BBQ adjacent to the college center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering fajitas, tacos, and drinks to name a few. “It’s a chance to get great info, have fun, and munch on some food. We’ll have some fun activities to do as well,” said Kuretich.
Metro awards NRT students
Students who donated over 500 hours cleaning invasive plants on several large restoration projects were awarded by Metro Parks and Greenspaces. “Invasive plants can prevent native plants from regenerating in an area and in some cases they can eliminate native plants from a site,” said Kate Holleran, MHCC Natural Resources Technology instructor. “This reduces site diversity, not just of plants, but also of the wildlife associated with native plant communities.”
For more information on the NRT program, contact Holleran at 503-491-7306.
Nominees sought for award
The deadline for nominating student employees of the year is Feb. 15. Cat Parish, Student Employment Coordinator, has sent an email to MHCC staff and faculty to remind them of the deadline. Once nominations are in, two students will be chosen, and will recieve $500 for their outstanding work.
College plans preview night
Mt. Hood Community College will be holding its annual Preview Night Feb. 8 from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
“This is to help [potential students] get the information they need,” Nicole Taylor, MHCC student recruitment coordinator, said.
According to Taylor, the groups participating are admissions, financial aid, advising, the career center, as well as the various educational departments, Student Activities Board, Associated Student Government, and the radio program.
This year, according to Taylor, promotion for the event began much earlier, due to decreased enrollment.
“The event was planned last June,” she said.
During the summer invitations were sent out and save-the-date card have been handed out at local high schools.
The event will feature a department fair, a presentation and a student panel to answer questions.
If groups on campus would like to participate, they can contact Taylor at (503)-491-7214.
Mock funeral event slated
The Funeral Service program will be meeting with members of the community, getting experience making funeral arrangements, Feb. 21 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Doug Ferrin, MHCC director of Funeral Service Education, said in a press release that “this is an opportunity for students and volunteers to gain experience working through possibilities for final disposition.” The event is a practice drill, alowing students to simulate all funeral-related activities.
The event, which will take place in the Town and Gown Room, will provide information on all options available in the funeral industry, including casketed burial, cremation, entombment, inurnment and body donation.
To make an appointment, one may call Ken Cheney, a Funeral Service Education student, at (503)-752-2356.
