Tough loss for women

By James McEchron

Wednesday night the Saints took on Clackamas, and by games end were trailing by 39 points. Clackamas has been undefeated in the league with 7 – 0.
Coach Larry Davis had little to say. “We could have done a lot better.”

Top scorers Naylor and Yates were on the court for nearly the entire game. One shot was blocked by MHCC compared to eight Clackamas blocks. There were 27 team turnovers.

After the first half Clackamas was winning 44 – 19, making it near impossible for the Saints to catch up.

So far this season, the Saints have been making about 29 percent of the field goals they shoot, compared to the 41.8 percent team average. Free throws average higher for the Saints than opponents at 64.1 percent compared to 60.1 percent. Two pointers and three pointers are below average.

MHCC women’s basketball is on a 15-game losing streak. They face SWOCC on Saturday. SWOCC has similar statistics to the Saints; FG 33 percent, FT 65.3. While SWOCC has a slight edge, MHCC’s Saints might have their prayers heard. In a game between SWOCC and MHCC on Jan. 14, the first period ended with SWOCC in the lead 41 – 34.

MHCC fell off in the second with 35 – 17, but with four ties and three lead changes MHCC’s Saints have a good shot at reclaiming some lost pride. This time around MHCC has home court advantage.

The Jan. 28 game between Umpqua and Mt. Hood also ended a loss for the Saints, 88 – 50.

The Saints have been having trouble in the second half. They start strong, but have a more difficult time after the break.
