Larkin Franks has been around MHCC for 14 years working in various positions, trying to help the college in any way, and this year is no different for her. As of mid-September, Franks was appointed the assistant dean of instruction.

Franks’ position brings new responsibilities for her. As the assistant dean of instruction, she will work on projects that may include the agriculture agreement and the agreement between MHCC and four-year universities.

“I saw an opportunity [with this position] to work on behalf of the college and administration. The role presented new opportunities and new projects that will benefit the students here,” Franks said.

Along with her role, Franks also teaches Introduction to Travel and Tourism and an HD100 College Success course. She holds a B.A. in secondary language, a minor in Spanish and a master’s in travel and tourism from George Washington University, in Washington, D.C.

Franks is still familiarizing herself with the new position and stepping out of her last years’ position as the Faculty Association President. She plans to stay with the college for some time.

“I truly do believe that community colleges provide pathways for students. We offer everything from entry GED, ENL and ESL programs,” Franks said. “We take people from where they are in life and help them to pursue career paths. It [MHCC] really is an exciting place, one where you get to work with people of all ages, interests and backgrounds.”

In her HD100 course, Franks encourages students to seek out all the support opportunities at MHCC. She also recommends that students become involved with the college, in any way that they see fit.

“Just be open to life’s experiences and look for positive solutions in life,” Franks said.

As Franks settles into her position, she will begin working on variety of projects that will benefit students and the school.
