Damaged lots need work

With all the construction under way on the MHCC campus, various project ideas come up in people’s minds.

Students may wonder why some things are done and others are not. “Obviously we have a bigger need of things than we have money to do,” said Gary Murph.

The Advocate considers parking lot repair an important consideration in the distribution of some of the funds designated for “capital improvements.”

Often students and staff offer ideas for better parking or more parking. “Build parking garages,” they say, or they propose different types of parking permits based on a host of qualifications.

While finding a place to park can be a frustration, getting to the space can be just as difficult.

Areas of the parking lots on campus are quite deteriorated and tear up tires. Some potholes are so large they can do major damage and need to be repaired. “That is something we should be doing on a regular basis,” said Facilities Management Director Don Wallace.

The visibility of marker signs is a problem as well. Most of the parking lot designation signs marked A-Z are not much more than white circles with faded streaks inside. According to Wallace new signs are ready to go up.

Murph and Wallace agree that the parking lot needs regular maintenance, but funds are limited.

Although the money needed is not available now, The Advocate still believes that the MHCC parking lots are an issue that needs to be approached soon.
