The next four years in the right hands

Josh Weston, President of Campus Ambassadors

The Advocate

On November 2, the course of our nation was set for the next four years. The majority spoke, and President Bush was re-elected. There is now one looming question facing our nation now: did we make the right choice? Or will we be saying in a year or so, “What have we done?”

I am here to put your fears to rest and let you know that we did make the right decision. Bush is the right man for the job, and here’s why:

First: it is never a smart thing to change commanders in time of war. Both parties have acknowledged that we are fighting an ongoing war on terror, and you may not agree with how the war is being fought, but to switch commanders in the middle of it would be like taking the computer module out of a sports car and putting it in a pickup and expecting it to run fine. It won’t happen unless everything else is changed as well, and we don’t have the time or the finances to make any changes now, so it just wouldn’t make sense.

Second: there’s Bush’s stand on moral issues. Bush seeks to uphold the sanctity of marriage, where Kerry would have thrown out this 4,000-year-old institution. Bush also seeks to end the thousands of senseless murders that occur daily as a result of abortion. Kerry would have continued to allow innocent children to be slaughtered. Bush also has an air of integrity about him. He knows what his convictions are and has stuck by them. Kerry doesn’t know what he believes. He flip-flopped on almost every major issue that came up, depending on who his audience was at the time.

Third: taxes. Bush’s tax plan provides tax cuts for 100 percent of the population, from the poorest to the wealthiest. No matter what the liberal media tells you, Bush did not give tax cuts for the wealthy alone. He gave the same percentage back to everybody. The rich got more money back because they paid more to start with. Kerry would have done away with the Bush tax plan and only given tax breaks to a whopping 16 percent of the population.

Fourth: government spending and the economy. Even with the war on terror adding up to billions of dollars, government spending under Bush is still LESS than government spending under Clinton. The economy is almost back up to pre- 9/11 levels. The jobless rate is steadily dropping, and the economy is picking up again.

But another thought -- I don’t remember seeing anywhere in the Constitution or Bill of Rights that says that the president is responsible for the economy.

In the end, you have to decide for yourself if you think Bush is doing a good job. Look up the facts for yourself. I’ve given you my opinion, now as the next four years go by, stop listening to Michael Moore and Bill O’Reilley. Formulate your own opinion, and learn to think for yourself. Then you will see the blessing we truly have in President George W. Bush.
