The Theater Department’s production of “Magic Theater” is set to begin performances Monday.

This children’s show, which includes a vibrantly colored set, ensures to increase the imagination of kids while remaining fun for everyone. With 17 actors and no leads, talent thrives as these actors get a chance to show their best skills.

“It was a joy to work with lovely bright colors, lights, and a disco ball.,” describes Laura Brown, who has been working on this production since the beginning of rehearsal. The set is very simple in its design, with bright colored boxes scattered over the stage. The costumes also reflect this style, consisting mostly of basic colors and nothing too eye-catching or distracting.

Director Rick Zimmer, who has directed this play before in his seven-year teaching career here at Mt. Hood, believes his cast is ready. “It’s written to be performed in a simple matter.,” says Zimmer, “The story comes to life without effects. Basic details about the show, light effects and essentially actors will do that.” For the first few shows, the sold-out audience will be mostly K-3 grade school children from local elementary schools. Zimmer said, “They are the most honest audience members. They’ll let you know what they like something and when they don’t like something.”

Actors in the play feel the excitement of the approaching debut date. “This is my first show here at Mt. Hood and I’m having a lot of fun,” says Jason Wilhelmi, who also shows off his skill of juggling in the show. “It’s a very informative show for little children,” says second-year student Andrew Runge, “It’s a way to use their imagination and have fun.”

Shows will be performed at the College Theatre on Nov. 8, 10, 12, 15, 17, and 19 at 10:30 a.m. There will be a special afternoon performance on Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.
