Arts Breifs

Music Department
The Mt. Hood Community College Jazz Band and Genesis are once again ranked under the Jazz Education Journal’s Top Ten Campus CDs. The Jazz Band is recognized for their CD “Super Blue” as well as Genesis being recognized for their CD “Don’t Think It’s Easy.” Both groups are acknowledged nationally and MHCC is the only community college to be listed. This is the sixth year that Genesis has made the list.
The Jazz Band will be playing at the 28th Northwest Jazz Band Festival May 6 in the gym at 5 p.m.
Genesis is performing May 12 and 13 in the College Theater at 5 p.m. as part of the 39th Northwest Vocal Jazz Festival.

Latino Club
The Latino Club is hosting a Cinco de Mayo event today. The event is held in the court yard across the bookstore from 11 p.m. to 1 p.m. Performances include a traditional Mexican dance, Aztec dance and carne asada tacos will be on sale.

Gamers’ Club
The Gamers’ Club is hosting a Halo 2 tournament today in the Student Center, the tournament begins at noon and is open to everybody. There are two big screen televisions and eight people are able to play at a time. There will be free food and prizes.

Creative Writing Committee
Pulitzer nominated author Tom Spanbauer is hosting a workshop in the Visual Arts Theater May 8 at noon. The workshop focuses on Dangerous Writing.
Along with the series of presentations, Chuck Pahlaniuk will be doing a reading in the Visual Arts Theater May 31 at noon. Plus, there will be a Poetry Slam in the Town and Gown room June 7 at noon.

Visual Arts Gallery
The “Student Art Exhibit” will open May 10. The exhibit has a compilation of art pieces designed by students. The reception for the exhibit will be held May 18 from noon to 2 p.m.

 

QASO
QASO will be sponsoring an event called “Guess the Het” May 11 in the College Center from noon to 1 p.m. There will be a panel of individuals, the audience asks them questions and they are to find out which of the individuals are heterosexual. The purpose of the game is to break stereotypes. The audience is not allowed to ask questions like “do you have boyfriend or girl friend?”

 

ASG & SAB Flag Ceremony
The student government is inducting Syria’s flag into the flag display in the College Center on May 16. The event runs from noon to 1 p.m. There will be a brief presentation on the culture of Syria. Food and music is offered as entertainment as well.
