Tina Ring

By Nicole Donner

The art of print making is a small but useful class people can take in the Mt. Hood Community College art program. It takes hours, days and possibly years to find the right image, to carve that image into a plain piece of wood and create something that can be used over and over again.

First-year student Tina Ring has spent a long time venturing through subjects such as business and psychology, but has always felt a connection with art. She was finishing her final year at Arizona State University when the opportunity to explore the subject was made available. Ring was just three credits away from graduating with her bachelor’s in business when she decided to take art classes to fill up her remaining requirements for graduation. Soon she realized her passion and fascination with the subject and she immediately changed her major to art leaving her degree in business unfinished.

“When you find something you love to do, it’s an awakening,” said Ring.

After attending school in Santa Cruz, Calif., she eventually moved to Portland to obtain her bachelor’s in psychology at Portland State University in 1995 and started to raise her family. She said she pursued a degree in psychology instead of an art degree because of financial reasons, but just this past year finally decided to major in print making.

Ring returned to school once again, this time at MHCC, to obtain her art degree as her children, now 7 and 10 years old, go to school. Ring found the life of a stay at home mom needed a boost and she wanted to continue her education in art during the days her sons were at school.

“I didn’t want to be at home,” said Ring. “I wanted to get back into art.”

Though according to Ring, it would have been ideal to be a “working artist,” she is also working toward her teaching certificate and someday wants to return to MHCC to teach the same subject that keeps bringing her back.
