Tobacco-Free Campus Task Force to discuss options about a smokefree campus
The Advocate
The Tobacco-Free Campus Task Force will meet Tuesday at 1 p.m. to gather information requested by the MHCC District board April 8 about how MHCC could go tobacco-free.
June Jacobs, assistant to the president for strategic initiatives & board relations, said she thinks President John Sygielski asked her to lead the task force because of her work with the board.
Jacobs said the task force would look at the costs associated with going tobacco-free, the need for communication in such a move, and what a timeline might look like.
“It’s not like this is brand new and coming out of the blue,” Jacobs said, adding that “the Bruning Center for Allied Health Education and the Head Start locations (on campus) are already tobacco-free” as required by federal law.
As of Wednesday, there were eight members of the Tobacco-Free Campus Task Force. Jacobs said she is asking Associated Student Government President Janine Johnston if there are several students who could join the task force.
Becky Weisen, manager, benefits and payroll systems, and Teri Wooley, benefits compensation associates, have committed to participating in the task force on behalf of the MHCC Human Resources Department.
Jacobs said the Human Resources Department handles any policy and regulation revisions. She hopes to have many organizations and association represented in the task force.
“It’s so involved in doing something like this, the more information the better our process can be,” Jacobs said. “We’ll brainstorm and look at all the possibilities.”
Jacobs said the task force will look at the other Oregon colleges that have gone tobacco-free or are in the process of doing so, to see what their process looked like and what worked for them.
Jacobs said the task force would meet twice before the May 13 district board meeting when they have been asked to return their report.
