The MHCC District board approved a new networking and cyberSecurity degree at its meeting Wednesday night.
The new program will be drawing from pre-existing MHCC departments including the Computer Information System department, the Database Management degree program, the Health Informatics degree program and the Computer Game Development program.
The initial projected student full-time equivalents for the new program are 20-60, based on reports from similar programs nationally.
Rodney Barker, the dean of instruction and one of the presenters of the program at the meeting, said the program is also in the process of negotiating agreements with various other schools, including Portland State University, DeVry University, Concordia, and George Fox University to tie in the new program with the universities.
The program is also working to collaborate with the National Security Agency (NSA) and is applying to become Oregon’s only center for Academic Excellence Information Assurance 2-Year Education and are also working with another NSA-funded program called the Secure Information Systems Mentoring and Training based in Dartmouth University, which will allow students to participate in security workshops over the summer at no cost to students.
