Weatherdeck Division finds their sound

“Not being metal in Sandy is like being the black sheep,” said Sean Taylor, the lead singer and guitarist from Weatherdeck Division.

The band describes their style as alternative rock, but they have influences from a lot of different people.

Dan Marcus said they’re biggest inspiration is people who live passionately.

Taylor and drummer James Stagg have known each other since sixth grade and during their sophomore year in high school they met Marcus, but the three were never close friends and didn’t form a band until the winter of 2008.

After Marcus finished high school, he said he wanted to start a band with serious musicians. Marcus made the call to Stagg who in turn contacted Taylor.

The band is named Weatherdeck Division because they all like the sea and the ocean has had a big impact on the way they live.

The band also has a lot of underlying nautical themes in their music, according to Marcus.

“The ocean is pretty extreme,” said Taylor who talked about the different stages of the ocean: calm, angry and treacherous.

“We play what we feel,” said Taylor.

They have been performing for about six months in Sandy, Gresham and Portland and finished their first CD in August. “We’ve accomplished a lot,” said Stagg.

Producer Dean Baskerville helped the band produce the album “In Dust and Ink.”

Taylor said, “He (Baskerville) was one of my teachers.”

According to Marcus the band tripled their budget producing the album so it took longer to produce, but “it turned out really well.”

Besides the sound engineering, the band created the CD themselves, including the music and lyrics that were written.

“We’ve all gotten way better,” said Taylor about the difference a year makes.

Taylor said the album is very diverse, but all the music is their sound and they do not want to limit themselves to a particular genre. Taylor compared their music to a puzzle, there are a bunch of different pieces but when it comes together it all makes sense.

The band will perform at a fundraiser in Sandy on Nov. 7.
