ASG and SAB. You will hear these two acronyms repeatedly during your years at MHCC, but what do the acronyms stand for and exactly what do these two organizations do?

ASG stands for Associated Student Government. SAB is an acronym for Student Activities Board.

The ASG is the student’s representative and governing body. It is composed of two branches, the executive branch and the legislative branch.
The legislative branch is comprised of 15 senators, the ASG vice president, and an Administrative Assistant to the Senate. The duties of the ASG senate include confirmation of executive cabinet officers; communication with, and representation of, the students and deans of the different departments on campus; and interpretation and enforcement of the ASG constitution and by-laws.

ASG’s current Senate is Rose Laguerre, Josh Knapp, Gabriela Hernandez, Romeo Diahn, Holly Wilburn, Enock Elisme, Charles Cookman, Angela Allegretto, Godson Akubuiro, Yakawel Tajada, Andrew Steynor, Raul Reyes, Jonatan Lopez, Verity Bishop, and Sam Brown, with Senate Administrative Assistant Priscilla Pitts and ASG Vice President Bethany Peterman.

The Executive Cabinet consists of six Senate-appointed directors, the ASG president, and the Executive Cabinet administrative assistant. A new addition to the executive cabinet this year is the position of special correspondent. L. John King, former vice president-elect who stepped down for health reasons, fills the role of special correspondent. The responsibilities of the various directors within the executive cabinet are broad and diverse. The responsibilities of the ASG president involve appointing directors, which is subject to senate approval, presiding as chairperson of executive meetings, enforcing disciplinary action within ASG, and vetoing certain acts and resolutions of the Senate, amongst other responsibilities.
The Executive Cabinet consists of President Bradley Best, Special Correspondent John King, Director of Communications James Dezellem, Director of Diversity Rosa Sanchez, Director of Community affairs Jeannine Retzlaff, Director of Finance Rae Peres, Director of Student Organizations and Clubs Nick Liezen, and Director of State and Federal Affairs Kristopher Huges.

The Student Activities Board’s purpose is to develop campus program planning that includes events intended to create awareness around cultural issues, health and wellness, and social integration. Its members are chosen by a selection committee that consists of two members of the Student Life Office and three students appointed by the ASG executive cabinet. The Director of Student Activities serves as chair during meetings of the SAB.
The SAB this year includes Administrative Chairperson Holly Corbitt, Administrative Assistant/Marketing Coordinator Nadia Ruiz, Receptions Coordinator Kate Crabbe, Multi-Cultural Coordinator Alexis Cabera, Sports Coordinator Hector Santos, Health and Wellness Coordinator Angelica Ogden, Seasonal Events Coordinator Collin Miller, and Senate Administrative Assistant Priscilla Pitts.
