Celebration de Mayo in College Center

Stephen Floyd/The Advocate
Pedro and Dolores Miguel perform a traditional Mexican Hat Dance Thursday in the College Center to a crowd enjoying free pico de gallo provided by the M.E.Ch.A. Club. The dance was part of the Cinco de Mayo celebration, which also included indigenous presentations like an Aztec dance. Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not a celebration of Mexican independence but rather a remembrance of the Battle of Pueblo in which Mexican rebels fought against the Mexican Imperial Monarchy headed by Maximilian of Austria. Maximilian had been put in charge of Mexico by Napoleon III (nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte) in order to maintain political power close to America, according to www.mexonline.com.
