MHCC- Bond measure fails In November, Mt. Hood Community College pursued its seventh bond measure. The measure failed, recieveing only 45 percent of the votes. As a result, key areas of the college will not receive funds. The Early Childhood Development Center, which was on the bond to be rebuilt, is now wrestling with new accreditation standards that may force the center to close.

MHCC- Board position stays in family In February, the Mt. Hood Community College District board lost Ron Russell, who died after a 13 month battle with glioblastoma (a fatal brain tumor.) Russell was on the Foundation Board, before serving as a district board member. In 1999, Russell was elected to serve on the MHCCD board. During his first year, Russell was also elected chairman. Following his death, the board began a search to fill his position. On May 10, Beverly Russell, Ron’s wife, filled his empty seat. She was selected by the board out of a pool of five candidates. She will fill the seat until June 2007.

MHCC- Welding instructor dies In April, welding instructor Wendall Johnson died. Johnson had said he was not feeling well and was taken to the hospital by one of his students. He died later that night from a heart attack. Welding students created an art piece (left) in his memory.
