President George W. Bush’s Republican Party also lost control of the U.S. House of Representatives. This was a long awaited shift in power for the Democrats who have been in the minority since 1994. Exits polls showed that middle class voters who fled to the Republicans 12 years ago appeared to be returning to the Democrats. American casualties in Iraq increased and public support for the war fell, as did the ratings for Congress along with the president. NEWS- N. Korea gets nuclear North Korea announced they had conducted their first nuclear weapons test. According to Korean Central News Agency, the test was a success and found no radioactive leakage from the site. But the United States Geological Survey detected an earthquake around 10 a.m. on Oct. 9, with an estimated magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter Scale. A nuclear test that would be considered a success should be about 10 times more powerful. This means that either the test fizzled or they didn’t actually test any nuclear devices. By Oct. 14, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution imposing sanctions on North Korea for its supposed nuclear test. These sanctions were not supported by China or Russia.
