Cast built, spots still open

Though auditions for this fall’s production of “The Emperors Dragon” ended Wednesday, Director Paul Navarro said spots as warriors and puppeteers are still available.

“We have a small cast,” Navarro said, “but we need a lot of puppeteering.”

Auditions were held Monday and Wednesday in the Studio Theatre but Navarro said the turnout wasn’t as large as he had anticipated.

“But I’m really happy with the people that did show up because they were really enthusiastic about it,” Navarro said.

Navarro said the cast is composed of both returning and new students and said he is confident in the abilities of the first-year students.

“I think just about all of them have had experience in high school doing plays.”

Navarro wrote the script over the summer from an idea he said had “been in the back of my mind for awhile.”

Set in Japan, the story follows an orphan named Torao who is intent on returning the emperor’s baby dragon to its mother.

Though rehearsals start today, Navarro already has plans for the set.
“I always knew it was going to be hugely multimedia,” Navarro said. This includes “projections on the screen (and) lots of sound.”

Technical Director Daryl Harrison-Carson is also excited about the upcoming production.

“The play is so much fun,” Harrison-Carson said. “Every time I read it I just laugh.”

“The Emperor’s Dragon” will be performed for school groups on Nov. 9, Nov. 12, Nov. 13, Nov. 16, Nov. 18 and Nov. 20. There will be a matinee performance for the public on Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $2 per person.
