MHCC safety security manager hunt still on

The position of MHCC safety security manager has not been filled, but more than 20 applications for the job have come in.

Dick Byers, the director of facilities management, said the position of director of public safety has been upgraded to the more all-encompassing safety security manager post. The job requires a broader range of specialized skills in risk management, fire marshalling and general security.

Don Oliver, the former director of public safety, recently left the college during the restructuring of the entire department.

Oliver was given three month’s notice that his job was being eliminated, and was invited to apply for the new job, Byers said. However, after much deliberation, he decided to retire.

The move was part of a planned reorganization of the entire branch of public safety to allow it to focus on multiple aspects of campus security, including keeping the campus up to code in fire safety.

“Who’s going to be the best fit? I don’t know,” said Byers. The screening process has been completed, which has narrowed the 20 applicants down to around six or 10. Byers called the process “very competitive.” However, the question of who’s going to fill the gap should be answered by mid-January.

Oliver, who was a sheriff’s deputy in Wyoming during the late 1950s and early 1960s, is reportedly enjoying his retirement, Byers said. While Oliver could not be reached for comment, Byers said he is spending much of his time scuba diving, golfing, and seeing his extended family. As Byers put it, he is “a very busy retired man.”
