Performance Review:
Genesis finds harmony at Fall Festival

This past Wednesday MHCC’s vocal Jazz band Genesis pleased the audience with an excellent performance at the Genesis Fall Festival.

The all day event showcased the talents of 8 different vocal jazz bands from high schools all over Oregon and Washington.

After the high school bands performed Genesis took the stage and amazed the crowd.

Despite being composed of mostly new members and having only a couple of months to learn together, Genesis sounded like a group that had been performing together for years.

Not a sour note was hit in their nearly flawless performance to a packed house at the MHCC Visual Arts Theater. They performed several of their standard songs as well as several selections from their new holiday album “christma-quanza-hanukkah” including “Auld Lang Syne” and “Dradle Dradle Dradle.”

Their performance was well received by the crowd. After their closing performance, a holiday medley that briefly included a well executed rendition of Naughty by Nature’s “O.P.P” in which the chorus was replaced with the line “Are you down with G.O.D. Yeah you know me,” they received a standing ovation.

The vocal and instrumental solos throughout their performance highlighted the talent that this year’s iteration of Genesis possesses. With such a large number of talented performers showcasing such a well practiced musical aptitude this early in the school year I have no doubt that their future performances will continue to wow audiences.

Musician Louise Rose headlined the event as well as acted as a guest clinician to the high school performers. Louise Rose is an accomplished musician, and has a background in both composing and arranging music as well as performing.
