Added classes cause textbook setback

Increasing demand for MHCC courses has resulted in many sections being added to the schedule at the last minute.

After Sept. 1, 283 classes were added to the schedule, according to Jason Taylor, instructional services coordinator. The classes were added to the schedule “in response to increased enrollment” and many of the textbooks for those courses are not yet available in the bookstore.

Carol Pauker, textbook buyer at the bookstore, said, “I want this college to grow and adding classes is a good thing, (but) the stress hits all at once and creates chaos for about a week and a half.”

According to Pauker, writing classes were added just days before the start of fall quarter.

“They were very organized and made sure I knew,” Pauker said. “(But) some of the orders (from other departments) were made very late. Orders were made today,” she said Monday.

Pauker began placing textbook orders in the first week of August and has continued to make orders as she is notified which textbooks will be needed for classes.

“Most late orders take place that first week. The dust should be settled by next Monday,” Pauker said. She added that she feels for the students, as the “shipping of seven to 10 days can be a really long time if you have homework due.”
