MHCC runners Amanda Faggard and Slavic Ishenin took sixth and 12th place, respectively, at the Northwest Cross Country Classic meet Saturday at Lane Community College.

According to cross country Head Coach Matt Hart, this was the first race out of high school for Faggard, who was only a few seconds from her lifetime personal record. Hart said Ishenin set a new lifetime PR for the 6,400-meter run.

Asked how the meet went overall, Hart said, “We had to wake up very early and spend a long time in the vans on our way down to Eugene. Despite this, our students ran really well and made some great progress.”

Overall, Hart said the team needs to work on “strategy and the psychological aspects of competition.”

“We have a great group of students who all like running. However there is a difference between running and competing.” Hart said he hopes to have some of these new strategies worked out before the upcoming Willamette meet, when the team will face several community colleges and four-year colleges, making the meet “very competitive.”

Amanda Smith and Stacy Bird placed in the top 20 for MHCC.

“We expect all of our student-athletes to do the best they can and feel a sense of accomplishment in their efforts.  We will do our best to get these athletes as fit as possible and even try to inspire them the best we can but it is up to the individual to have the desire to succeed,” said Hart.

This weekend, the Saints head to Willamette University to participate in the Charles Bowles Invitation at Bush Park in Salem.

The meet begins at 10 a.m.
