Coat drive held until April
The Advocate
The Chako Kum Tux Native American Student Club is holding a coat drive for homeless youth through April 2010.
Donations can be taken to the college center where several drop boxes wrapped in holiday paper can be found inside the doors.
Donations will be given to homeless youth through Frontier Missions (a ministry whose focus is helping American Indians) and NORA Rehabilitation (whose patients suffer from neurological disorders).
Club president Renea Ly Menchaca explained that a coat drive was needed because “the recession is affecting everyone and there are a lot of homeless adults and youth.”
Menchaca said at some point she hopes to give donated coats to MHCC students in need, but currently there is no such program.
The main issue regarding the drive was locating boxes for the donations, said Chako Kum Tux Vice President Christine Bruno. Members of Chako Kum Tux were able to locate what was needed.
Ten coats have been donated so far, but Menchaca hopes to collect at least 100 by the end of the drive.
Bruno said, “This is the first time we’ve done this.” There have been no monetary costs in running the coat drive, but it has taken a lot of “time and networking so far,” she said.
