Jazz Band to perform tribute for veterans

The MHCC Jazz Band will perform “a tribute to veterans” concert Monday at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland.
Jazz Band director Susie Jones said, “The band members are excited about this event. It is a great tribute to our veterans, and is musically challenging to us, as we are trying to capture the ‘sound’ of each style of music we are playing.
“This is especially hard because none of us lived through the 1940s and ’50s,” Jones said. “We are relying on YouTube videos for reference.”
The Jazz Band will perform “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” with the vocal trio Two Sisters and a Mister, “Fly Me to the Moon” with vocalist John English and “In the Mood” with American Patrol.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.
Jones said, “We will also play in the finale, “Oh, Happy Day” with a choir of 250 and led by the Rev. Richard Probasco.”
Hosting the event is Remembering America’s Heroes, an organization that provides education to youth and community so they can understand and appreciate the value of freedom and its cost.
The Jazz Band has two off-campus performances this term and a campus jazz night Dec. 3.
