Advising assists in changing courses

Today is the last day to drop individual class without withdrawing from school or changing the grading status in a course, according to Luis Juarez, director of academic.
“In the Academic Advising Center, we help the students out. A lot of students aren’t sure if they want to drop a class and it’s our job to assist them,” said Juarez.
According to MHCC’s website, students receiving financial aid must notify the Grants and Contract Department of their intention to drop a class and students may be required to repay all or a portion of the financial aid that the student received.
Students should be aware that attendance is mandatory in the first weeks; if students don’t show up within four weeks, the instructor may drop the student without their permission.
Dropping a class within the refund period will not appear on the transcript and for withdrawals after the refund period, a “W” grade will be assigned.
Juarez said the MHCC website is a useful tool for the students; it has all of the important dates and video demonstrations and information students should be aware of.
According to Juarez, DARS (Degree Audit Report System) is also a great tool for students with a major. DARS helps students when it comes to choosing or dropping classes because it has a layout of all the classes that are needed for the major, plus it helps when it comes to graduating or transferring to other colleges.
Dec. 4 is the last day to withdraw from the college. MHCC defines a formal withdrawal as dropping all classes and the withdrawal must be received and processed by the admissions office.
“If students need help, they need to see an adviser and be patient. We will help them through it because it doesn’t just happen overnight, and if you’re comfortable withdrawing without an adviser, then power to you,” said Juarez.
Students should be aware that in the Academic Advising Center, advisers will help students with anything from dropping a class to choosing a major or classes, and transferring to other colleges.
“If you need help with anything, come to us. We will help you. You’ve got to work hard and we will help make it happen,” said Juarez.
