Writers Club provides creative outlet

Students who love writing and want to be heard may find an outlet in the Writers Club.

“If you write poetry, non-fiction, fiction or screenplays, you are welcome,” said Chad Bartlett, MHCC writing instructor and adviser to the club. “They can bring it in (writing samples) and just let it out and we will listen or if they want feedback, we will give it to them.”

According to Bartlett, the club started with a student wanting to start a club specifically to help other students on improving their writing.

“It was about three or four years ago when she was interested,” he said. “I told her I would love to do it (advise) and the writing club was formed.”

The Writers Club is not recognized as a club by the Associated Student Government because the club lost all its officers last year. The students graduated and none of the new members stepped into the position of officer.

“We just don’t have enough members to be an official club,” said Bartlett. “We usually have had troubles with people showing up. Usually we only have three or four members show up each week but not the same people show up each week.”

Bartlett hopes that the club will soon be gaining new members and be more active on campus. He said the club used to have readings on campus every quarter but have stopped due to not enough participation.

“We used to have big readings,” he said. “It would be nice to do that again and we really haven’t publicized the club except leaving flyers in staff boxes to tell their students. We hope that more will soon join if we start to publicize the club more.”

To join the Writers Club or for more information, interested persons may attend regular meetings every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Humanities conference room. For more information, contact Bartlett at 503-491-7151.
