The Saints track and field team finished with individual success at last weekend’s Pioneer Open at Lewis and Clark College.
Terra Schumacher was the standout athlete for the women with strong performances in four events. Schumacher finished first in the 100-meter dash (13 seconds), first in the 100-meter hurdles (15.07), second in the pole vault (12 feet)
and was part of the first-place team in 4x400-meter relay (4:04.24).
The men were led by sprinter Micah Strong who finished second in both the 100-meter dash (11.04 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (22.58 seconds).
Strong was also part of the 4x100 meter relay team was first with a time of 42.68 seconds and the 4x400 meter relay team that ended with a second-place finish behind Clackamas Community College with a time of 3:21.43.
Head Coach Matt Hart has been very impressed with his team’s performance and the way everyone gets along. “Athletes are blowing up in their events,” he said.
“We have a stronger team than the last few years and everyone is providing help towards our success.”
The team hosts the Saints and Cavaliers Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m. at Earl Klapstein Stadium for the last home meet of the season.
Hart anticipates that his athletes won’t compete at 100 percent after a long week of
conditioning and getting prepared for the final weeks of championship meets. These start May 9 with the Southern Region Championships at Lane Community College in Eugene.
“We had a heavy load this week at practice. Next week we are going to back off on the conditioning and focus on the fitness level,” Hart said. “We have been twisting our backs all year long. It’s time to give it a break. I am not concerned at all how we finish (tomorrow).”
The team heads to Pacific University May 2 to compete in the Pacific Twilight meet at Lincoln Park Stadium in Forest Grove.
