Gym floor receives new look

The MHCC gym floor was resurfaced and lightened over the summer.
Fred Schnell, health and physical education instructor and former athletic director, said he pushed for the refinishing of the court.

“I was part of it during the beginning stages,” he said.
The original plan was to just refinish and resurface center court after the snowstorm last winter and leave the rest of the court untouched.

“I pushed for them to refinish the whole floor, instead of just the center circle,” said Schnell. “It would have looked terrible with just the center court a different color.”

With the final approval, the floor was refinished and given a new look.
The main basketball court is lighter than the rest of the floor, which “gives it a pop,” according to Schnell.

“When they refinished the floor they also repainted the sidelines and it just makes the gym look more pleasing instead of just one big yellow floor everywhere,” said Schnell.

During the resurfacing and refinishing, the volleyball team had to suffer through the project.

“We had to play at Reynolds Middle School,” said volleyball head coach Chelsie Freeman. “It was hectic trying to make sure we had everything when we went over there and all the equipment was working properly. It was a stressful time.”

The volleyball team was able to return to the court earlier than expected.
The gym was ready in time for the volleyball final preseason game against Clark Community College on Sept. 9.
